THE STORY BEHIND

Hearlded by a clap of thunder, a large black dog the size of a calf and with burning eyes, burst through the doors of St Mary’s Church Bungay, Suffolk, the summer of August 4th, 1577. In a devilish frenzy the hellhound tore down the aisle through the villagers hiding from the raging storm outside, slaughtering a man and young boy with his teeth and claws. Then, as suddenly as he had appeared, he vanished, taking off once more into the storm, the steeple collapsing in his wake

.He swiftly moved on to the church of Blythburgh where he mauled yet more people and his claw marks, scorched into the door, can be seen to this day. Over the years there have been many sightings of the creature through East Anglia. Sometimes he is recorded as having appeared headless, and at others as floating on a carpet of demonic mist.

Whatever form he chooses to take, locals call the beast ‘Black Shuck’.
