THE STORY BEHIND

In the early 12th century, near the wolf-catching trapping pits from which Woolpit gets its name, two strange young children appeared dressed in unfamiliar clothes and speaking gibberish. Startlingly, they both possessed bright green skin!

The siblings were bought back to the village where they initially refused to eat anything but green beans. Sadly, the boy soon succumbed to an unknown illness and died. His sister remained, her skin gradually turning a normal colour, and slowly learning to speak English.

Eventually, the child shared her mysterious story with the astounded villagers. She and her brother hailed from the land of St. Martin, a land perpetually shrouded in twilight but where another luminous land could be seen across a great river. The pair had been dutifully tending their father’s flocks, when the beautiful unknown sound of church bells had entranced them. When they regained their senses, to their astonishment they found themselves near the village of Woolpit.
